The online databases are provided by the Upper Hudson Library System and Albany Public Library as a Central Library service for member libraries and public library card holders in New York State’s Albany and Rensselaer Counties. All databases are available from home with your Library card unless otherwise stated.

Description of Database

Ancestry Library Edition
Ancestry® Library Edition, one of the most important genealogical collections available today, has unparalleled coverage of the U.S. and the U.K., including census, vital, church, court, and immigration records, as well as record collections from Canada and other areas. The Ancestry Library Edition collection has approximately 4,000 databases including key collections such as U.S. federal census images and indexes from 1790 to 1930; the Map Center containing more than 1,000 historical maps; American Genealogical Biographical Index (over 200 volumes), Daughters of the American Revolution Lineage (over 150 volumes), The Great Migration Begins: Immigrants to New England, 1620-1630, Social Security Death Index, WWI Draft Registration Cards, Federal Slave Narratives, and a strong Civil War collection.
Available only on computers in the Main Library.

HeritageQuest Online
HeritageQuest Online is an essential collection of unique material for both genealogical hobbyists and professionals, with coverage dating back to the late 1700s. HeritageQuest Online combines digital, searchable images of U.S. federal census records with the digitized version of the popular UMI® Genealogy & Local History collection and other valuable content. Along with U.S. federal census images and indexes from 1790 to 1930, HeritageQuest Online offers more than 20,000 book titles, including nearly 8,000 family histories and over 12,000 local histories, in addition to the more than 250 primary source documents such as tax lists, city directories, and probate records.
Remote access is available only to Troy Public Library card holders. To access HeritageQuest Online from a computer outside the library, Troy patrons only – Click Here - and enter the 14 digit barcode number that appears on the back of your Troy Public Library card.

Jewish Data
Jewish Data, one of the largest professionally compiled Jewish genealogical resources of its kind currently available, contains over 100,000 records, including images of tombstones, school yearbook pages and Citizen Declaration documents. New records are added on an ongoing basis. Jewish Data is available only on computers in the library.

Career Library
offers a comprehensive information resource for career and college research.  Five user-friendly components help users match their interests to occupations, education prospects, and more.  Created for individual researchers and career/education technology professionals, Career Library is a valuable addition to libraries and career centers.

Grolier Online
Includes access to the Encyclopedia Americana, New Book of Knowledge and Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia as well as Roget’s II: The New Thesaurus and the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition.

Encyclopedia articles include links to further readings, a bibliography, selected full text articles, web page links, and links to related Encyclopedia Americana articles.

The Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia includes encyclopedia articles, news, timelines, quizzes and games, and research starters. It also includes an atlas and dictionary. Articles can be grouped by lexile level and are aligned to standards.

The New Book of Knowledge is for middle grade students and includes literary selections, a timeline, projects and experiments, news, homework help and more.

Proquest Platinum
Periodicals covering a broad range of material: business, education, general reference, health, language arts, sciences, social sciences, and many other curriculum-specific subject areas. Browsable subjects include arts and humanities; computers and Internet; education; environment; health; lifestyles and culture; politics and government; science and mathematics; social issues and policy; and sports and entertainment.

Primary Search provides full text for more than 60 popular magazines for elementary school research. All full text articles included in the database are assigned a reading level indicator (Lexiles). Full text information dates as far back as 1990.

Reference USA
Reference USA, a comprehensive directory of business and residential telephone numbers and addresses, is searchable by name, geographic area or zip code. Find company size, top personnel, credit rating, yearly sales ranges, and more.

Salem Health
Salem Health brings online access to Salem Press’ award-winning health reference works. The first reference set included is Salem Press’ bestselling Magill’s Medical Guide. In its printed form, the current edition of the Guide has grown to five volumes and 3,500 pages. The Guide covers diseases, disorders, treatments, procedures, specialties, anatomy, biology, and issues in an A-Z format, with sidebars addressing recent developments in medicine and concise information boxes for all diseases and disorders.

Times Union
The Times Union online archives contain most locally written stories published since 1986. Headlines and summaries can be viewed for no charge. Your public library has a special arrangement with the Times Union to view full stories on-site in the library, though not from home or office. Please ask a librarian for assistance.

Infotrac/Thomson Gale databases:
*Some of the Infotrac/Thomson Gale databases are part of the NOVEL project, which is made available through Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) funds by the New York State Library.

  • Health and Wellness Resource Center and Alternative Health Module* contains information on fitness, pregnancy, medicine, nutrition, diseases, public health, occupational health and safety, alcohol and drug abuse, prescription drugs, herbal remedies, and alternative or complementary treatments, etc. Included are links to diet, cancer, and health assessment sites as well as government databases. Material contained in this Resource Center is intended for informational purposes only.
  • Business and Company Resource Center* is a fully integrated resource bringing together company profiles, brand information, rankings, investment reports, company histories, chronologies and periodicals. Search this database to find detailed company and industry news and information.
  • The Twayne Authors Series*: Twayne World, U.S., and English Authors each contains the full text of 200 frequently used Twayne Literary Masters books on individual World, U.S.,or English authors, for a total of 600 individual full-text titles.
  • Custom Newspapers* comprises a collection of 150 newspapers, both national and international, including the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and Knight Ridder/Tribune News Service and Business News.
  • New York State Newspapers* comprises a collection of 10 major newspapers published in the State of New York, including the New York Times and the New York Post.
  • National Newspaper Index* provides quick access to the indexing of America’s top five newspapers in one seamless search: The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Christian Science Monitor, The Los Angeles Times, and The Washington Post.
  • Book Review Index Online Plus is a comprehensive online guide to book reviews that includes more than five million review citations from thousands of publications, with linking to more than 630,000 full-text reviews.
  • Testing & Education Reference Center will benefit those preparing to take a GED, college entrance, civil service, or licensing exam. Take on-line practice tests and use test prep eBooks to obtain your education goals. Looking for a college or graduate school? Need help finding scholarships? Use this database to search thousands of college and graduate school entries and to identify scholarships that meet your financial needs.
  • Thomson Gale LegalForms provides a wide selection of state-specific (and multi-state) legal forms across the most popular legal areas. Includes real estate contracts, wills, pre-marital agreements, bankruptcy, divorce, landlord tenant and many others. Also included is a comprehensive attorney state directory and a dictionary of legal definitions explained in laymen’s language.

Searchasaurus
Searchasaurus is an exciting and easy way for young researchers to experience online searching. It is an animated interface with a dinosaur theme that encourages students to enhance and develop basic search methodologies.

Kids Search
Kids Search, a search interface designed especially for students in grades K through 5 and powered by EBSCOhost, searches the American Heritage Dictionary, EBSCO Animals, Funk & Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia, and EBSCO’s Newspaper Source and Primary Search databases.

Stat-USA/Internet
Stat-USA/Internet, a service of the U.S. Department of Commerce, is a single point of access to authoritative  business, trade, and economic information from across the Federal Government (available only in the library.  See librarian to log on to database).

USA Trade Online
STAT-USA and the Foreign Trade Division of the U.S. Census Bureau are pleased to bring you USA Trade Online! With this dynamic service, you can access current and cumulative U.S. export and import data for over 18,000 export commodities and 24,000 import commodities. USA Trade Online provides trade statistics using the Harmonized System (HS) up to the 10-digit level and the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) commodity classification codes up to the 6-digit level (available only in the library.  See librarian to log on to database).
