Job Opening: Librarian I – Adult Services

The person in this full time position provides public service to the community by staffing the reference desk, participating in collection development activities and by teaching and/or coordinating basic computer instruction classes for adults. This position may also involve some clerical work.

Typical work activities may include:

  • Providing reference and reader’s advisory service to the public, including assistance with local history and genealogical research
  • Providing computer training to the public and other staff members
  • Performing collection development duties such as selection and weeding of library material
  • Expanding the library’s outreach programs to reach members of the community that are currently undeserved by the library
  • Supervising clerical staff and volunteers
  • Producing library brochures and bibliographies
  • Keeping informed of professional developments and remaining active in professional organizations.

Work Schedule:

  • Must be available for some evening and weekend hours.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education: Must have or be close to completing the requirements for an M.L.S. degree.


  • Full time salary (35 hours per week) is $37,619.

This is a civil service position and appointment is provisional. The successful candidate will need to take the City of Troy civil service exam when it is offered.
